A Scottish schoolboy’s letter to a teacher mourning her dog has gone viral.

According to the teacher’s daughter, Lucie Dunne of Glasgow, Scotland, the family dog, Charlie, was recently put to sleep, causing her mother great distress. The loss prompted a student named Callum to write this touching tribute in honor of Charlie, which Dunne posted on Twitter.

The note begins with a thoughtful disclaimer, with Callum writing, “Sorry if you don’t like it or it makes you emotional.”

Inside, the boy has written an acrostic-style ode to the dog that spells “Charlie” down the side.

“I’m sorry about your dog,” Callum writes. “I bet your dog was really cheeky. I bet your dog was always happy. I bet your dog was super-adorable. I bet your dog was really related to you. I bet your dog was really lucky to have you. I bet your dog was super-incredible. I bet your dog was always full of energy. But most of all I know your dog was special and your dog is in a better place and is looking over you.”

Needless to say, the heartfelt gesture has won over many — and prompted a few ugly cries.

May we all be so lucky as to have a Callum — and a Charlie — in our life.
