Students learn about outdoors through botany competition
Apr. 27—PLYMOUTH — Area high school students had the opportunity to experience nature and learn about plants this week during the 2024 Ashtabula botany wildflower competition at Indian Trails Park.
Students from A-Tech, Edgewood, Geneva, Grand River Academy Lakeside and Saint John spent a couple of hours wandering through wooded areas identifying plants marked by competition organizers.
"I enjoy coming down here with my friends, and enjoy the walking around," said Owen Chase, a Lakeside senior.
The event is sponsored by After School Discovery and the Ashtabula County Master Gardeners with numerous area businesses and organizations donating to make the event possible.
The winners will receive awards at a luncheon in early May, with the first, second and third place teams receiving plaques. The school of the first place team will also receive $200 for the school and copies of Newcomb's Wildfire Guide, with the second place school receiving $100, and $50 for third place.
