Students at Earhart Environmental Magnet learn about the importance of Earth Day

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Students at Earhart Environmental Magnet hosted an “Earth-Stravaganza” for Earth Day on Monday.

The students heard from their director of Native American programs and participated in activities like fishing, insect sweeps, and a plant scavenger hunt. They also learned about pollination, plants, and wild animals.

One teacher hopes students not only have fun for Earth Day but also have the framework to build life-long habits.

Small changes make a difference on Earth Day

“It’s so important because they are our future. They’re the ones that have to go out and be our interpreters and teach others how we can treat our earth better because if we don’t start making a difference, we won’t have a nice earth to live on,” said second-grade teacher Hayley Mayes.

Their message to the rest of us is that “Earth Day” is more than one day.

“The most rewarding part about having Earth Day here is just sharing it with our students and seeing how excited they are and seeing the impact it really does make,” said Mayes.

Students are taking the lessons beyond campus with a camping trip. The younger kids will stay the night at Camp Woods, while the older ones will travel to camps in Kansas and Oklahoma.
