Student farmers market returns to Summerlin

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Arts, crafts, and produce grown from 60 schools within the Clark County School District are available at the largest student-run farmers market in the nation.

Green Our Planet will host the event at The Lawn at Downtown Summerlin on Friday scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The farmers market is meant to empower students to sell their produce and crafts to the public, growing their financial and business management skills. Lucy Scott, a third grader from Marion Earl Elementary, showed off the goods sold at the event, and her themed clothes.

“We planned a t-shirt that says ‘Earth Day vibes,’ and then we wanted to add some color to it, so we added the glasses,” she said, showing off a pair of multi-colored sunglasses.

Tami Lemire, Vice President of Partnerships and Impact at Green Our Planet, said it is important for people who come to the market to know that all of the money spent is helping kids.

“The students have spent a lot of time – very excited […] you will find lots of fun marketing and sales strategies that are part of that literacy plans,” Lemire said. “They do a lot of soaps and candles and arts and crafts.”

2024 represents Green Our Planet‘s eleventh year as the nation’s largest student farmers market, officials said and is the largest school garden program in the US. The organization says it is a hydroponic and outdoor school garden non-profit that promotes gardening, healthy eating habits, and STEM leadership.

All proceeds from the farmers market will go back to the schools to fund their school garden programs.
