A student at Marysville High School in Michigan has been arrested after he allegedly made a music video in which he threatened a school shooting.
On Tuesday, administrators at the school were informed of the clip, which featured the student “rapping about shooting up the school,” according to Marysville Public Schools Superintendent Shawn Wightman in a letter to parents obtained by WXYZ.
“The Marysville Police Department was immediately notified about the situation and are currently investigating the matter,” the letter, sent on Mar. 12, read. The student did not attend school the day the administrators were made aware of the video, but his parents were informed of their child’s video and were told “that the student is not to return to school or be in proximity of any of our school campuses.”
The student, reportedly a 16-year-old male, was arrested on domestic terrorism charges. He is currently being held at Macomb County juvenile detention center.
“As you already know, our highest priority during a serious incident or crisis in the district is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors,” Wightman wrote in the statement. “Consequently, the above mentioned incident will be fully investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Sandra Cook, whose son attends the school, said the school responded quickly, but she’s worried such an incident could happen again. “I feel like it’s something we’re going to have to keep dealing with,” she told WXYZ. “Social media, YouTube, all that stuff. These kids just have too much access. So whether they’re really thinking of doing this or it’s just something they do in a whim, you get caught now.”
A few students told the outlet that the student in question is a nice kid who just made a mistake.
