This Striking Yellow Kid’s Bedroom Is the Blueprint For Successful Pattern Play

Even though interior designer Fitore Syla has years of design experience and co-founded the design firm Muza, she had a bit of help when it came to decorating her kid’s room in their colorful apartment. It didn’t come mainly from her husband, Arianit Fazliu. Instead, it came from someone a lot more invested in the space: her 3-year-old son, Ben.

“We involved Ben by explaining everything and making him curious about our home. He often joined me during site visits, especially enjoying conversations with the workers about his room,” Syla writes. “He was so thrilled about the construction process that when we moved in, he was almost as happy as he was during the building phase.”

But Ben’s input into the room design didn’t stop with visiting the home during construction. When designing the room, Syla looked to his love of animals for inspiration and reflected that on the walls using Michalsky’s “Change is Good” wallpaper from Boston Group.

“The wallpaper we chose was diverse, much like the animal world itself, with new creatures for Ben to discover even after a year,” Syla shares. “It’s been wonderful to see his imagination grow as he finds new animals. These days, he falls asleep counting the stripes on zebras.”

A hanging solar system creates a sense of wonder. But with all that whimsy, it was important to make sure the room was safe so he could be independent in the room. To do this, Syla created a wardrobe and shelving system that was around his height to make sure he was able to grab things himself. “Creating a practical space where he can reach everything on his own has further boosted his confidence and sense of ownership. And I love the fact that we could cherish him by doing so,” she explains.

Even though Ben’s room has fostered freedom and independence, he prefers playtime with his parents (rather than solo activities) in the space. “Lately, he’s been really into arranging his superhero figures and creating stories with his toy dinosaurs,” Syla shares.

Ben’s room is a great example of the wonder, color, and whimsy that’s defined throughout Syla’s entire apartment. Visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy to see more.
