This Striking $4 Million Oceanfront Home Is Located in Dublin’s Equivalent of the Hamptons
Howth, Ireland, is an affluent village and outer suburb located east of Central Dublin, and the bulbous peninsula on which it is located is often compared to the Hamptons for its grassy knolls, sandy dunes, stretch of beach, and fabulous seafood restaurants. The wealthy seaside enclave, just 30 minutes from Dublin, charms with its harbor, wildflower-covered sea cliffs, centuries-old castles, cliff walks, and hiking.
A contemporary residence in Howth, listed for $4 million with David Blanc of Christie’s International Real Estate and dubbed The Lake House, has an unusual siting that offers views over both the Irish Sea and a small, private lake that meanders over most of the beachfront home’s front yard. On the ocean side, sandy dunes run along Burrow Beach to the north, with views of Lambay Island, an island in the Irish Sea with a historic castle.

The striking residence features an angled and cantilevered design unlike anything in the area. It was completed in 2014 and designed by Aubrey O’Flaherty Architects, an award-winning firm that specializes in contemporary design.
At 2,874 square feet, the limestone-clad home is fairly modestly proportioned. There are four bedrooms and four full bathrooms, plus one powder room, spread over three levels.
The home was carefully positioned to maximize natural light and follow the path of the sun—the long, slender home captures both sunrise and sunset views—and the roof is pitched upwards to accommodate large, triple-glazed German windows that effectively combat heat gain from the sun.
The interiors are clean-lined and spare yet warm, making use of natural materials for the custom cabinetry, wide-plank floorboards and exposed wood ceiling beams throughout. The house’s east end cantilevers over the lake, so it looks and feels as though it’s floating atop the water.
The second floor is where you’ll find the great room, an open-plan space with a fireside living area with built-in shelving, a dining area, and a kitchen. Vast picture windows frame cinematic views over the beach. The great room connects to a large covered deck with ample seating and a barbecue. The third floor contains a library and office with a deck overlooking the lake, as well as the primary suite, which has lake and ocean views, a spacious beach-facing en suite bathroom, and a walk-in closet. By night, the home glows from the inside thanks to numerous rectangular windows.
Meanwhile, the ground floor has a garage, along with two bedrooms that share a bathroom, a second kitchen, a mud room and space for storage and mechanical equipment. Even though the Irish Sea is typically chilly, Burrow Beach and nearby Claremont Beach are renowned for all types of watersports, including kite surfing, especially in the summer, though lovers of the cold plunge have been known to wade year-round. A swimmer’s bathroom is perfect for rinsing off after a polar plunge or a paddle-boarding session in the ocean.
