Stressed? Science Says You Need to Decorate Your Bedroom with *This* Color

We've burned through aromatherapy candles and decluttered with the fervor of Kondo in hopes of making our bedrooms relaxing retreats. But apparently, the key to a blissful boudoir actually lies in color scheme.

According to a 2013 Travelodge study, blue can have a tangible impact on sleep quality and thus, our mood overall. Umm, what? Yup, researchers found that of the thousands surveyed, folks who slept in predominantly blue rooms reported nearly eight hours a night (the highest of any color category) and generally, a happy outlook each morning.

We figured blue's calming effect was more abstract—and had something to do with the whole water/from-whence-we-came bit. But as Edinburgh Sleep Centre's Chris Idzikowski explained to The Daily Mail on the subject, there are actually "specialised receptors called ganglion cells in the retina part of our eyes, which are most sensitive to the colour blue." (*Scratches head.) Oh, science—you mysterious beast.
