How to Watch the Oscar-Winning ‘American Fiction’ from Home

American Fiction, a film starring Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K. Brown, Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, and Issa Rae, has received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Academy Award, accepted by writer-director Cord Jefferson, capped a lustrous award season for the film following its release in December 2023. On Oscar night, it was also nominated for Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Brown), Lead Actor (Wright), and Original Score.

Based off of the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, the movie is about a Black professor and writer named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), who writes a satire book full of Black stereotypes to prove a point. However, the novel ends up getting published and becoming extremely successful.

American Fiction was released in select theaters in the United States on December 15 and hit the U.K. on February 2. Those wishing to watch the film from home can rent or buy it from platforms like Prime Video and Google Play.

It’s likely the film will eventually stream on Prime Video, as this is an Amazon MGM Studios production, but not date has been announced yet. There is a chance that it might also appear on MGM Plus.

As for an estimated timeline for streaming, we can look to Saltburn, another Amazon MGM Studios production. Saltburn had its theatrical release on Nov. 17, 2023, and just over a month later on December 22, the movie made its way to Amazon Prime.

Don’t rule out the cinema completely, though. American Fiction is still playing in some theaters, if you prefer to watch the Best Picture nominee on the big screen.
