IF THERE'S an adage in horror worth remembering, it's this: if James Wan is involved, you're going to have a good time. Wan, who recently found a major win as producer of M3GAN, directed the first two Insidious films, ushering in a new horror franchise about family that struggles against a demonic possession.

Originally starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, the series now includes five films and a spin-off story. The fifth film, which will serve as Wilson's directorial debut, just premiered on July 7, 2023.

Titled Insidious: The Red Door, the film returns to the franchise's original family featured in the first and second films. In Insidious, we first met the Lamberts (Wilson, Byrne, Ty Simpkins) who call a spiritual medium when they discover their son is being held hostage by a malevolent spirit. Insidious: Chapter 2 then sees the Lamberts realize they're still connected to the spirit world despite freeing their son, Dalton.

The Red Door catches up with the Lamberts 12 years later, when Dalton is set to head off to college. Unfortunately, even after all this time, Dalton is still hounded by the demons of his past.

Whether you're a long-time Insidious fan or just enjoyed the first film and want to catch up after a long time away, we have the perfect guide for you to watch all the Insidious films. No more searching for each film, the links are all in one handy place below.

You can watch every Insidious movie in chronological order. Although we don't recommend it.

While the first two films follow a connected story, the third and fourth Insidious films serve as prequels to the Lamberts' story.

In theory, you could watch the films in chronological order, finishing up your watchlist with the Lamberts and their trials. But as we've said in previous watching guides, we're big fans of watching films in the order they're released, not chronological, as prequels serve to build out a narrative viewers already know.

But if you still want to watch it chronologically, here's the list:

Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

Insidious: Chapter 1 (2011)

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

But like we said, it's better to watch the films in the order they were released.

Here's how to watch every Insidious movie in the official order:

Insidious (2011)

Directed by James Wan and written by his longtime collaborator Leigh Whannell, Insidious is a solid horror film offering creative scares and an intriguing plot. It's arguably the best film of the bunch.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Although it makes a decent attempt, Insidious: Chapter 2 couldn't garner the same fervor as the first film. The film directly follows the events of the first film, and is the last audiences see of the Lamberts until 2023's Insidious: The Red Door. The film notably establishes the franchise's central character, however, in the spirit medium Elise Rainier.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

Stefanie Scott and Dermot Mulroney star in this prequel film, which follows Elise Rainier as she takes on another family's spirit problems. Instead of saving Dalton, this time Elise helps a young girl who fails to contact her late mother, instead releasing a demon. Chapter 3 is a solid entry to the series, even though it still doesn't have the same quality as the first film.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

Another prequel in the franchise, The Last Key follows a young Elise who experiences a haunting after opening a forbidden red door and unleashing a demon. Decades after the fatal haunting, she encounters the demon again and decides to get rid of it once and for all.
