A beloved homeless man was given a new guitar by the Santa Fe community after he was robbed of his few worldly possessions.
The well-known street musician, who simply goes by the first name Kavin, has been living on the streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and serenading strangers for 50 years.
Kavin has made some friends along the way while playing guitar to earn enough money to survive. Over the years, the musician has grown especially close with locals Jen Stillions and Tim Schwartz.
"Just walking around the plaza with my friend and I love the street music and he was playing and we stopped to chat with him," Stillions told KRQE.
Schwartz told the station that along with Kavin's unique voice, his witty signs also tend to grab the attention of passersby.
"He's got some real catchphrases that are really good," Schwartz said.
Tragically, in August 2018, most of Kavin's possessions, including his guitar, were stolen from him.
"It's how he earns money to eat and survive out here so it's a really big deal," Stillions told KRQE.
Without hesitation, Stillions and Schwartz took it upon themselves to help.
Stillions said she posted on an online Santa Fe bulletin board to see if "anyone might have an old guitar lying around that they want to get rid of."
Within an hour, she received two offers.
Not only were multiple community members willing to donate guitars, but after word of Kavin's story spread, people from all over the country expressed interested in his creative signs.
Stillions and Schwartz then began taking photos of Kavin's signs and selling the prints in order to collect money to benefit their friend.
"When the power of people come together, beautiful things happen," Schwartz said.
