‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Is Changing Things Up for Some of Your Favorite Characters
Only three months have passed since Stranger Things season 2 premiered on Netflix, but we’re already wishing there were more episodes to binge-race. While the cast of the show is busy winning statues and tearing up red carpets this awards season, it won’t be long until they get back to work, and in a new interview, executive producer Shawn Levy dished a few details about what they’ll be getting up to.
“We’re going to give Will [Byers] a break,” Levy told Glamour. In the first season, poor Will was of course abducted by the Demogorgon, and while he made it home in season 2, he maintained too close of a creepy connection to the Upside Down. “We’re not going to put Will through hell for a third season in a row. He’ll be dealing with stuff, but he won’t be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play.”
But don’t assume that means everything will be okay. “We’re [going to be] dealing with forces of evil that are new,” Levy told the mag, without giving much of anything away.
Similar to both seasons 1 and 2 of the hit Netflix show, Levy said that there will be eight or nine episodes for season 3, depending on how the specifics of every scene in every episode gets worked out.
So far, he shared, the full story line is already complete for season 3 — and that includes more screen time for the burgeoning friendship between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery), something that Matarazzo himself is very excited for.
“I want them to have a connection like they’ve really had a connection for a year — like they’re brothers,” Matarazzo told Glamour, noting that his character wants an older male character to look up to, and Steve could fit the role nicely.
The cast and crew are set to start filming season 3 this spring, and are eyeing a late 2018 or 2019 release. “If we could make it faster, then we would,” Levy said. “But we’re going to make it well. We’re going to do it right.” We’ll be waiting!
