A 'Stranger Things' Fan Theory About Vecna and the Mind Flayer Is Going Viral

Stranger Things fans have been getting all tangled up in the intricacies of season four, from the Will Byers plot hole to listening to Kate Bush on repeat. Now, a new fan theory trying to figure out whether Vecna or the Mind Flayer is more powerful, and fans have questions.
The latest season of the Netflix original introduced a new supernatural enemy, in the shape of Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower), who appears to have taken over from the Mind Flayer in his attempts to terrorise the people of Hawkins, on behalf of Demogorgon. So who actually is the worst bad guy, and the main enemy of Eleven and the gang?
Well, Johnnysokoll has a fan theory, pitting the Mind Flayer and Vecna against each other. As they wrote on Reddit, "It’s pretty evident that there is some confusion on who is running the show here, Vecna, or the Mind Flayer. I believe there are supporting pieces for both villains, however the answer is still unknown for sure."
They then put forward a case for the Mind Flayer, and a case for Vecna.
Is the Mind Flayer the main Stranger Things enemy?
As the theory explains, "Dustin is heard saying in S4 that the Upside Down has been around for 'thousands, maybe millions of years.' This obviously does not coincide with Henry Creel, later Vecna, being only around 30 years old. When 011 sends 001 into the Upside Down using her powers... 001 is seen falling into a red abyss being hit with what seems to be fireballs of some sort. If Vecna created the Upside Down, he obviously would not be getting hurt by it."
Is Vecna the main Stranger Things enemy?
"The case for Vecna... could still be seen valid because of how powerful he is. Vecna is the protagonists’ biggest threat to their survival thus far. Not only that, but the biggest piece of evidence is shown whenever the Mind Flayer is present - spiders. Since young Henry was infatuated with spiders, it’s really intriguing to see how the Mind Flayer’s illustration looks so much like a spider. It’s crazy."
While that admittedly doesn't confirm whether Vecna or the Mind Flayer is the top dog, it's interesting to look into the intricacies of the Stranger Things plot links together. Maybe we'll get answers in season four part two?
