Stranger Things spoilers follow.

Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers have responded to Millie Bobby Brown's criticism about them being "sensitive Sallies," as the series edges towards its fifth and final season.

Speaking ahead of season four's release back in May, Millie – who plays Eleven in the Netflix series – joked that the current cast is "way too big," adding that she had told the Duffers to "start killing people off."

Of course, season four has since spared the lives of its key characters. While fans may have breathed a sigh of relief having avoided any major deaths – for now, anyway – Millie suggested to TheWrap that the Duffers were simply "sensitive Sallies."

Fortunately, the Duffers are rejecting calls to "be Game of Thrones."

Appearing on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Matt Duffer responded: "What did Millie call us? She said we were 'sensitive Sallies.' She's hilarious. Believe us, we've explored all options in the writing room."

Explaining that a major death would be too "depressing," Matt continued: "We aren't Game of Thrones. This is Hawkins, it's not Westeros. The show becomes not Stranger Things anymore, because you do have to treat it realistically, right?"

Calling back to Barb's death in season one, he added: "So even when Barb dies, there's two seasons' worth of grappling with that, so imagine – is that something we're interested in exploring or not interested in exploring?"

In a moment of caution, Matt did warn that a game-changing death could still be "on the table" as they move towards the end of the show.

For now, though, the pair are happy to keep the gang living and breathing. "This is me basically defending myself against these Millie Bobby Brown accusations and explaining that there are lives behind it, and it's nothing to do with my sensitivity," Matt said.

"So, there you go, Millie."
