Photos of an unreleased Stranger Things-themed Monopoly board game have allegedly caused the moods of showrunners, Matt and Ross Duffer, to go upside down. Per a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the game's cards spoil major plot points from the highly-anticipated upcoming season. Photos of the cards began circulating in April 2022 and sources told the outlet that the Duffer Brothers "weren't consulted" about the game, which led to a "total meltdown" over season 4 details being leaked.

Like any significant pop culture moment, there's a Reddit thread dedicated to the leak where fans started some discourse online. A moderator wrote that the game was bought at "a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer. Nobody stole it; nobody leaked a sample." However, there was no proof of purchase attached to the post — so there's no telling how true that statement is.

Different stores and retailers are currently selling older versions of Stranger Things Monopoly, but The Hollywood Reporter states that "purported copies" of the season 4 game are already being advertised on eBay.

An anonymous source who's allegedly close to the Stranger Things production team told the outlet that the vast majority of merch and promotions around the show is "incomparable to any other show at Netflix" despite its producers being involved in several approval processes. "Lessons have been learned and, I expect, there will be more cohesion going into season 5," the source said.
