Humor: The Baby-sitter's club is a menace and must be stopped
They are practically holding the town's parents hostage
I shouldn't be talking. It can be dangerous. But someone must. All the other parents are too scared, so I guess it's up to me. I'm a mother of 4 here in Stoneybrook, and I want the world to know that the Baby-Sitters Club is a dangerous organization.
It wasn't always like this. They were so cute when they were ten-year-old kids helping out the neighborhood. We parents could rest easy, knowing the little ones would be safe in the hands of dependable sitters.
Yet, sometimes power corrupts. They realized how much money they could be making and started raising their prices. At first, it was fair, inflation being what it is, but there came a point where the prices were absolutely preposterous. Most parents couldn't afford it and didn't go out, hurting the local economy, which depended on tired parents with time and money to spend on its businesses.
For a brief moment, there was hope. A new group of kids created the Baby-sitters Enterprise. They even built an app to make requesting a sitter and paying easier. The Baby-Sitters Club was not happy with what they saw as an infringement on their territory. Kristy tried to sue them for using the word "baby-sitter" in their name, but the judge threw it out of court. It seemed like we were back to having affordable childcare for all and getting back control of our lives.
Then, one day, the app stopped working. The members of the Baby-Sitters Enterprise were gone. Police said they found notes from all ten girls indicating they'd run away. Poppycock! Those cops are taking bribes from the Baby-Sitters Club, and everyone knows it.
We parents tried to speak out. It didn't work. Then, we formed our own group, having the kids go to one house for the night with one parent acting as the designated caretaker. That ended when Claudia and Dawn arrived at the designated caretaker's house one night. They held the hands of the Kilingworth's children, who had both been asleep upstairs.
"We found them over by the freeway. You should be more careful," Dawn chirped as she led the child inside. "It would be a shame if anything happened to these children."
Claudia nodded and handed over her charge. "Yeah, they could have gotten hurt if it wasn't for us."
A voice spoke from the hallway, making the lone parent jump. Mallory's glasses glinted with menace as she said, "I agree. You don't even know how to protect your home. Can you believe how easy it is to find a spare key? They must have found it and let themselves out."
So now we are stuck under the oppressive thumb of a dangerous organized childcare mafia. We continue to use the Baby-Sitters Club in our town of Stoneybrook. One parent rebelled and refused but quickly changed her tune when one of her kids disappeared for three days. No other person, adult or teen, will take a babysitting gig. They know what the Club is capable of when they feel disrespected.
Yet when I heard they are opening franchises in other small towns across the US, I had to speak up. This blog post may be my end. I don't care. I need to let you know what's going on. Don't give into the allure of the Baby-Sitters Club. Don't become us.
