On September 3rd, Kaia Gerber rung in her 18th birthday with a strappy leather Versace ensemble, Amanda Lepore, and mother Cindy Crawford. But the real celebration came midsummer, when Gerber opted for a chop that took her medium-length brunette a few inches above her shoulders. The blunt, contemporary cut was executed by hairstylist Guido Palau, but to hear him tell it, the moment was entirely Kaia. “[She said,] if you don't do it, I'm going around the corner,” Palau recalled of the supermodel's insistence regarding the aesthetic shift. “It's very much her and her point of view about herself.”
While the above-neck refresh will undoubtedly spur a wave of lookalike styling, it's the attitude around it that feels refreshing. “You wouldn't know it, but she's not bothered about her hair,” Palau added. "She's not hung up about it, which is really inspiring for a young girl in fashion." The abbreviated brunette served her well throughout New York Fashion Week, adding a new note to her already aspirational runway presence.
Will she grow it out? Will she buzz it off? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Gerber is quickly becoming an icon in her own right, with her own look, on her own terms.
