Stories of Animals Who Went Down with the Titanic Have People Sobbing

The stories that came from the tragedy of the RMS Titanic range from terrifying to downright heartbreaking. Unfortunately, the story of the pets and animals on the ship falls into both categories. Consider this your warning before you read on--you'll need a tissue or two.

I had tears in my eyes merely seconds into watching @dailyeditions' informational (and emotional) video explaining what happened to the pet dogs, cats, and birds on board. Let's just say, including these four-legged passengers would have made the Titanic movie even more heart-wrenching.

My heart is shattered for these furry friends! They innocently tagged along with their first-class owners, only to be met with tragedy. I don't even want to think about whether more rodent-catching cats were on board than just Jenny!

In fact, I'm going to tell myself that Jenny made it off the boat safe and sound. Commenter @alissatron mentioned, "The story of Jenny I’ve heard actually is that she was not on the Titanic when it sank, so I’m going with that version." So am I! I might even have to tell myself that's what happened to all the animals, even though I know that's not true.

As the video mentions, three pet dogs did make it into a lifeboat with their owner, but 9 did not. In fact, there was going to be. a dog show on board! Someone let the dogs free at some point during the sinking, so we'd like to think that they were at least reunited with a loved one before tragedy struck. As for the pet birds--I'm going to tell myself they flew to safety!

These sad facts are going to be hard to recover from, but hopefully, this story inspires nautical engineers to consider animal safety when designing new ships.
