john: When I started teaching 46 years ago, the number one problem in schools was student discipline. It is still the number one problem, except today, teachers are handcuffed in the ways they can punish bad behavior. It is also true that a certain percentage of students have extreme behavioral problems that need to be dealt with in an institution that has the proper doctors and security to prevent them from harming themselves and others. Today's laws require that dangerous students must be accommodated in the school. They often turn to drugs for help, prescription or otherwise. Training does help prepare teachers for many behavioral problems, but no amount of training will solve the drug problems or the extreme behavioral problems. Curtailing guns is not the answer to school shootings. Providing societal conditions for better mental health is a better approach, starting with teaching personal responsibilities at home, and rewarding good work behaviors and effort. A more positive and less divisive news media would help. Movies and music that our children watch and listen to could also help, if they had better themes. Professional Athletes could be better role models. I know some actors, musicians, and athletes are great role models and make wonderful contributions to society, but many are very bad as role models. And finally, we as a free people need to be willing to accept other opinions and ideas even if we do not agree. It is ok to be out voted and to do things the other person's way.
