Stop everything: A “Hocus Pocus” sequel might actually be happening

It’s been rumored about for quite some time, but we just got a little more information on a possible sequel to Disney’s hit film Hocus Pocus. The original, which came out in 1993 and starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, has become somewhat of a Halloween classic — and the main cast has seemed on-board for more in the past.

The news comes straight from writer Mick Garris, who worked on the film. Garris definitely has a knack for spooky stories, as he’s gone on to create the television series Masters of Horror and Fear Itself.

He was interviewed by Forbes when the topic of a sequel came up.

“There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die,” Garris said. “I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel it might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead.”

Well now. It’s not what we expected, but it’s still pretty amazing news. Sadly, we have no clue if the original Sanderson sisters will be back, but fingers crossed for, at the very least, a cameo.

Deadline has also reported on the sequel — and according to their sources, it’ll definitely be a TV movie set for the Disney Channel. They state it’s still in the early stages of development, but note that Scarlett Lacey will be writing it.

Still, it’s good to know that Garris is still connected to the original film and the news surrounding it. He had nothing but pride when talking about how it’s morphed into a classic.

“Generation after generation, it’s kind of remarkable and fantastic to have something brought to the screen like that and to have it embraced generation after generation,” he said. “Everybody I meet, it’s either their daughters or their own favorite movie and it’s incredibly exciting.”

We’ll be sitting here patiently waiting for more news. Because no matter what, we’ll be watching.
