- Here's exactly what to expect this holiday season.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! December may be months away, but filming for the delightfully heartwarming Hallmark Christmas movies is already underway. The network is gearing up for its annual Countdown to Christmas special, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Though the full schedule has yet to be announced, we do know a few details about the 2019 Hallmark Christmas movies. Here's everything you need to know:
How many Hallmark Christmas movies will there be this year?
Last year, Hallmark broke its own record with a whopping 38 films. This year, they're outdoing themselves once more and plan to release 40 new movies. Yep, you read that right. Hope you didn't have plans for the fall...
Amazing! So, when will Countdown to Christmas start?
Good news: You won’t have to wait long to get in the holly jolly spirit. According to Entertainment Weekly, Hallmark plans to premiere its first two films in July. That’s right, as in one month from now! Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ Christmas Camp is set to air on July 7 at 9 p.m. EST, and Hallmark will run A Merry Christmas Match a week later on July 13, also at 9 p.m. EST.
The first will star Lily Anne Harrison, who plays a busy advertising exec who goes to a “Christmas Camp” to learn more about the holiday. She crosses paths with the owner’s son (Bobby Campo) and we’re willing to bet some sparks fly. The second program boasts Ashley Newbrough and Kyle Dean Massey as the leads. They’re lives are changed when they cross paths at Ashley’s character Corey’s ski village home and we already can’t wait to see the snow-covered set.
Jodie Sweetin is returning again.
The Fuller House star will appear in her third Hallmark Christmas movie in 2019. It’s tentatively called Merry & Bright, and follows Jodie’s Cate, the CEO of the Merry & Bright Candy Cane Company. According to ET, when Cate first meets Gabe (played by Andrew Walker), she thinks he’s a blind date set up by her mom-but he actually works for a corporate recovery firm. As they get to know each other, they realize they have a lot more in common than just work. Sounds like a can’t-miss romance to us!
Will Hallmark debut any Christmas shows?
Yes! Hallmark Drama, Hallmark’s third cable television channel, has announced two new series for 2019. The first dons the working title, Project Christmas Joy: Alabama, which will give a town in need an “extreme Hallmark holiday transformation,” according to a release.
The second is called Christmas Cookie Countdown, and we’d watch based on the name alone. The show will be a 5-episode competition where home chefs face off against each other to make the best holiday treats. Three “well-known” pastry chefs will serve as the judges, and the host will be a rotating panel of Hallmark stars. Sadly, Lori Loughlin will likely not be one of them, as Hallmark dropped her from their upcoming Christmas movies and the series When Calls the Heart following her alleged involvement in a massive college cheating scam.
What about Hanukkah movies?
Yep! Last year the network revealed that they're working on two Hanukkah movies for 2019. According to EW, one will be called Holiday Date, while the second still remains a mystery.
“We are currently in development on two original holiday movies for 2019 that celebrate traditions of both Hanukkah and Christmas, which will be especially meaningful when the two holidays overlap,' said President and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks Bill Abbott.
Kristin Chenoweth will star in The Christmas Song.
Filming is already in the works for The Christmas Song, which stars actress Kristin Chenoweth, best known for her role as Glinda in the Broadway musical, Wicked. Former NCIS actor Scott Wolf will play opposite of Kristin in the movie, which revolves around a youth choir director who needs to write a big song for Christmas Eve.
Blake Shelton is making another Christmas movie.
Blake produced Time for Me to Come Home for Christmas in 2018. The sweet story was based on a song he wrote with his mom, who also helped out on the set.
Now, The Voice coach is returning to create a second film for Hallmark. Though details are vague, a release states that the plot will “chronicle the emotional journey home at Christmastime” and will include songs from Blake’s musical library. Fingers-crossed that means his holiday hit with girlfriend Gwen Stefani!
Mathew Davis is making his debut.
Matthew Davis of Vampire Diaries and CSI fame will make his Hallmark debut in Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses, according to Entertainment Tonight. Jill Wagner plays his love interest Abbey, who is a single mom trying jump-start her interior design career. Her big break comes when local businessman Nick (Matthew) hires her for a project.
Hallmark Movies & Mysteries has already announced their first movie.
Holiday for Heroes is set to debut in November, according to Entertainment Weekly. It will star Melissa Claire Egan, Marc Blucas, and Patti Muran. You’ll want to grab the tissues for this one-it’s all about a woman and a soldier who exchanged letters for a year before their “worlds collide.”
That's all the info we have at this time. But we promise to update you with every detail we hear from now until it's finally socially acceptable to listen to Christmas music (at least out loud).
Psst…if you can’t wait until December, don’t worry. Hallmark is playing Christmas movies every Friday all year long!
