Still-Closed Washington Ski Resort Asks Internet To Guess Opening Day

Yesterday afternoon, Hurricane Ridge, a small ski area in Washington's Olympic National Park that has yet to open for skiing and riding this season, teased its forthcoming opening day announcement to skiers with a guessing game contest.

The rules are simple. Whoever "guesses the opening day and time down to the minute gets a free all lift [sic] ticket." Hurricane Ridge said two skiers could win a free lift ticket—one who guesses on Instagram and one who guesses on Facebook. The free tickets are "transferable to your friends or family."

In the post describing the contest, Hurricane Ridge wrote, "Looking good up there!" insinuating that enough snow has fallen to open the resort in the near future. Those who participated in the guessing game mainly chose dates at the end of this week, like Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

Like several other Washingtonian resorts, Hurricane Ridge has struggled amidst the arrival of an El Niño weather pattern. The resort hasn't opened this winter due to a lack of snowfall and periods of rain. Hurricane Ridge typically opens in mid-December, averaging 400 inches of snow a season. The resort's current snow depth is 40 inches.

However, this week, Hurricane Ridge received a snowy reset as a large storm system passed through Washington. More snow is on the way, too—NOAA predicts several inches of snow are possible at the resort by Sunday. Hurricane Ridge's webcams depict a welcome blanket of fresh snow, indicating that a positive turn of fortunes may be in the cards.
