Steve Harvey Tweets Out Cryptic Message About His "Haters" After Miss Universe Controversy

From Country Living

  • Steve Harvey hosted the 2019 Miss Universe pageant on Sunday night.

  • The 62-year-old former talk show host is coming under fire after seemingly making a mistake while announcing the winner of the National Costume contest.

  • Miss Universe reps have clarified that Steve did not make an error during last night's broadcast.

Four years after Steve Harvey's infamous 2015 Miss Universe gaffe, the 62-year-old host is once again in the news for making what some believe is another huge pageant mistake.

During the 2019 Miss Universe contest, which aired on Fox Sunday night, Steve appeared to misspeak while highlighting the National Costume contest portion of the competition.

“Earlier this week, all the contestants competed in a National Costume contest. Here’s the look at the winner, Miss Philippines,” he announced.

But while talking about the contest, Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon called him out as she stood beside him on stage.

“It’s not Philippines. It’s Malaysia,” Shweta told Steve, who immediately got flustered and began to blame the teleprompter.

“Let me explain something to you. I just read that in the teleprompter. Ya’ll got to quit doing this to me. I can read ... Now, they are trying to fix it now. See? This is what they did to me back in 2015 — played me short like that.”

According to Miss Universe reps, though, Steve didn't mess up at all — and the teleprompter was correct, as well.

“Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the Miss Universe 2019 National Costume competition,” a rep told Fox News. “As part of the broadcast, we also featured Miss Universe Malaysia Shweta Sekhon’s national costume. Miss Sekhon wasn’t aware we’d be announcing Philippines first, so she jumped the gun when Mr. Harvey started with that news. Mr. Harvey made a joke of it so as not to embarrass her, but no mistakes regarding the national costume winner were made by him, the prompter or production.”

The Miss Universe organization reiterated a portion of its statement when it announced on Twitter, tagging Steve, that he had the facts right all along.

Even though Miss Universe made it clear that Steve didn't mess up, viewers on Twitter thought otherwise. Some even suggested that the show meant to commit an error this time around (though, there is no evidence of this). "Did they do this 'mistake' on purpose? This isn't funny anymore," one viewer tweeted. "Change the host! This is repeatable mistake!" another demanded.

What's more, Steve himself may have addressed the controversy on social media. On Monday, he cryptically tweeted out a message about how to deal with the haters while promoting a clip of Family Feud. He then pinned the tweet to the top of his feed.

"Hate is louder than love, but love is stronger than hate. If you focus on those who love you, you can blow over the haters. Most people hate you only because of the way other people love you," he wrote.

Regardless of the controversial incident though, the evening's true highlight came when Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi took home the 2019 Miss Universe crown (Miss Puerto Rico Madison Anderson came in second place). Prior to becoming the next Miss Universe, Zozibini delivered powerful remarks about how she intends to use her important platform.

"I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me — with my kind of skin and my kind of hair — was never considered to be beautiful," she explained during the show while addressing social issues. "I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine."
