Steve Burton's time at Days of Our Lives might be coming to an end, but it's a whole new beginning for his future at General Hospital.

Just one day after announcing his exit from Days of Our Lives, the veteran soap actor, 53, revealed he will be returning to General Hospital to reprise his role as Jason Morgan, whom he played for over two decades.

The announcement came at the end of ABC's primetime special General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars & Storytelling on Thursday, Jan. 4, where Burton said in a pre-recorded clip, "Stay tuned—big things are coming to Port Charles."

Burton—who made his daytime television debut on Days of Our Lives in 1988—left the show and jumped over to General Hospital in 1991.

His GH character began as Jason Quartermaine, but after a car accident left him with significant brain damage and erased his memory, he reinvented himself as Jason Morgan.

Burton went on to play the role for the next 11 years, winning a Daytime Emmy for his performance in 1998. He left the show in 2012, and joined The Young and the Restless cast the following year, receiving another Daytime Emmy in 2017 for his role as Dylan McAvoy.

But Burton couldn't stay away from GH, and later returned to reprise his role as Jason Morgan from 2017 until 2021, when he was let go from GH after failing to comply with the show's COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

That's when he returned to his DOOL roots, reprising his role as Harris Michaels on the Peacock spinoff Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem, in 2022, and then on DOOL again in 2023.

Then on Wednesday, Jan. 3, Burton shared a YouTube video announcing his departure from DOOL, but fans likely knew he had something else planned, as he told his followers to "stay tuned," for another update.

Burton is expected to return to General Hospital in early 2024, Deadline reports.
