Stellar Blade Will Have Three Performance Modes for Your Comfort

The next big action-adventure game for PS5, Stellar Blade, has been confirmed to have three graphics modes. The upcoming game looks to be taking inspiration from Bayonetta and the Nier series with its hack-and-slash combat and frenetic platforming elements.

In an interview with Play3, Game Director Kim Hyung-Tae confirmed that it will offer three display modes:

  • Performance mode - Targets 60fps

  • Resolution mode - Renders at 4K with lower frame rate

  • Balanced mode

It's not uncommon for most current-gen releases to include an optional performance mode that targets a higher frame rate. With Stellar Blade being an action game, the existence of a performance mode shouldn't come as a surprise, even if the PS5 is entering the latter stage of its life cycle.

Most of Stellar Blade's gameplay footage has been shown off at 60fps, and there doesn't seem to be any nasty hit to image quality. What's more interesting is the confirmation of a "Balanced mode". A lot of PS5 games will offer the best of both worlds by targeting a 40fps output, which is only available on TVs that support a refresh rate of 120Hz. It hasn't been confirmed whether Stellar Blade's Balanced Mode will target 40fps or be an uncapped experience, but we hope it's the former.

Stellar Blade will have players take on the role of Eve who's on a quest to defeat the Naytibas, an alien race responsible for driving away most of humanity to off-world colonies. On her journey, Eve will work with Adam and Lily, two other survivors, to rebuild the last human city, Xion.

The game features a mix of linear and semi-open world levels, with some light RPG mechanics tied to progression. Throughout the story, Eve will face off against different enemy factions, with combat encounters leading to DMC-inspired boss battles.
