Stella McCartney Is Launching a Line of Biodegradable Denim

It’ll feature ten different pieces.

Stella McCartney is venturing into the biodegradable world with Italian denim brand Candiani.

As noted by Bustle, on January 13, Stella McCartney’s brand and Candiani announced their upcoming partnership, a 10-piece line of sustainably sourced and produced denim pieces that will be released in mid-2020. The two teams have worked together to create denim made with organic, plant-based yarns wrapped around a natural rubber “free from plastics and micro-plastics,” according to an Instagram post from Candiani.

“In a world where resources are diminishing and landfills are overflowing with discarded garments, it’s our duty to look for renewable resources, in addition to biodegradable and compostable materials,” said Alberto Candiani, owner of the Candiani family denim mill. “Denim has to take the lead as the indigo flag of this revolution and we are thrilled to be working alongside Stella McCartney to share our innovation and beliefs with the wider fashion industry.”

This isn’t the first sustainability venture for Stella McCartney. The designer has long advocated for the use of vegan alternatives to leather, even debuting a vegan answer to the classic Adidas Stan Smith sneaker in November 2019. McCartney’s winter collection that same year also centered on climate change, utilizing members of the environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion to call on the fashion industry to take its environmental impact more seriously.

Involving Candiani in this new venture seems to be another step toward a more sustainable future, especially given the significant water usage that goes into making even a single pair of jeans (reportedly around 1,800 gallons) and the toxicity of the dyes traditionally used in the process.

Stella McCartney and Candiani’s new line will be colored with Indigo Juice and Kitotex Vigital, a biodegradable dye derived from mushrooms and seaweed that the labels claim uses significantly less water and energy than its toxic alternatives.

Stella McCartney and Candiani’s joint denim venture will reportedly be available in stores and online starting in May 2020.
