Charleston has always been a popular getaway — one ripe for romance. The historic architecture, the waterfront parks, and the romantic mossy oak trees all make the South Carolina city a prime destination for couples looking for a scenic spot to spend a weekend. But one thing that can make or break a romantic weekend is the hotel. And in Charleston, an elite property makes sure people can make the most of the city: The Spectator Hotel.

Widely considered one of the best hotels in the city since it opened its doors, the hotel has been taking home awards for not only being the best in Charleston but also a standout property for romance. As soon as I arrived it was easy to see why The Spectator Hotel has won over the hearts of so many. From a personal butler service to breakfast in bed, The Spectator easily puts all of its visitors in the mood for love.

The hotel is in a prime location: It sits on a bustling corner, across the street from the famous Charleston City Market. Horse and carriages pass by every few minutes and it’s steps away from several local bars and restaurants.

The lobby is styled with a vintage art deco theme, including a large chandelier mixed with gold chrome accents. The staff was warm and greeted me with large smiles. I was even offered a welcome cocktail. I sipped the delicious Paloma as I enjoyed the calm of the lobby; none of the outside noise made it through the hotel doors.

I was only more impressed when I reached my room — a large room that was also styled with a modern art deco glamor. The king beds are locally made by Southern Lady, and are paired with luxurious sheets and pillows that made for one of the best hotel sleeps I’ve had. The spacious bathroom boasts white marble counters with a full range of amenities including heated towel racks.

Beyond the style, the in-room amenities take it to the next level. Every morning, guests are served breakfast in bed. I just put my order card outside my door picking my order and time window and everything else was taken care of. Every night, I received a different chocolate liqueur turn-down service. And if I happened to get hungry mid-day I could pick from the mini-bar that was stocked with local snacks and drinks and re-filled every day.

The service at The Spectator was impeccable. The staff was amazing from the moment I walked through the doors till the second I left. Every room comes with personalized butler service. The butler is the one who brings breakfast and restocks the minifridge — but it goes beyond that. My butler changed once during my time at The Spectator and both individuals were so eager to talk to me about Charleston, share the history, give me recommendations, and answer any and all questions.

And on a romantic weekend away, you want a little extra pampering. This is where the butlers are incredibly helpful. Dinner reservations? They’ll make it for you. Want to explore? They’ll bring around the hotel’s bicycles and give you directions. Forgot to pack something? They have a backstock filled with toothpaste, sunscreen, bug spray, and anything you might need. Just give them a call.

It would be a major mistake to stay at The Spectator and not visit the bar, which is widely considered one of the best hotel bars in the country and oozes a prohibition-style speakeasy elegance. The menu features regional craft beer and inventive seasonal cocktails alongside the classics so there is something for everyone. While there is no on-site restaurant at the hotel, the bar menu includes light bites and is definitely worth a pit stop before dinner. I enjoyed the “speck taters” dish with a cocktail that featured mezcal and Nashville hot honey topped with a chicken cracklin' from Hattie B’s.

If that isn't enough, The Spectator is ready to help you up the romance of your visit. Upgrade your stay with one of their many add-ons from bottles of wine in your room upon arrival to the delivery of hand-dipped strawberries or request a rose-petal turndown service. The hotel even offers full romance packages that include tours, gift certificates to fine dining restaurants, and even a two-hour photoshoot. There is an offer for almost any occasion — from anniversaries to the babymoon package. (The latter comes complete with a gift for the little one on the way.)

The Spectator is an excellent place to stay no matter the reason for your visit to Charleston. But the attention to detail and top-notch service make it a great choice for couples who are looking for something a little extra special.
