Calling all food enthusiasts: The legendary Ferran Adrià is opening elBulli1846’s doors to a pair of lucky guests for one night this fall, October 16 to 17, and the once-in-a-lifetime stay will be free of charge.

The 61-year-old Spanish chef who pioneered the molecular gastronomy movement, joined the staff at the then 20-year-old elBulli restaurant in Girona, Spain in 1984, took over control of the kitchen in 1987, then shuttered the space in 2011 at the height of its influence — much to the shock of the industry. With more than two million requests for one of its 8,000 annual seats, it was one of the most coveted reservations in the world — and a status symbol among the dining elite.

More than a decade later, Adrià reincarnated the restaurant as a 43,000-square-foot museum dedicated to showcasing the work that he and his team accomplished — spanning 69 exhibits across four spaces. (The “1846” references the number of dishes elBulli developed while it was open.)

“It is a museum where we explain what elBulli did to make it have the success it had and still has. A restaurant that marked a paradigm shift in western gastronomy,” Adrià told Spanish newspaper El País last April. “elBulli will be seen just as it was. The people who knew it will be moved. Nothing will be eaten. It is important to keep the legacy of what happened.”

And now, Adrià is keeping that legacy alive by also peeling back the curtain to his latest endeavor.

A lucky pair with a penchant for food (and food history) can now experience elBulli1846 in the best way possible. But it’s not going to be easy to snag, considering that the stay — which is not a contest — will be hosted by Adrià himself, cost nothing, and potentially involve “a review of public records.”

The chosen guests, who will be responsible for making their way to Roses in Girona, will get to indulge in amazing experiences such as overnight access to the museum (including its private rooms, such as the Shrine to Saint Stomak in the Pantry Chapel); dinner with Adrià in one of his favorite Roses restaurants; a night sleeping on a “plated” bed inspired by elBulli’s signature liquid olives; spectacular views overlooking the Costa Brava beach; and upon checkout, dinner at Barcelona’s Enigma — helmed by Albert Adrià, Ferran’s younger brother.

It promises to be the kind of experience no person could ever forget, but there are caveats. Those looking to book a night should know that there won’t be any shower facilities. Instead, they will be provided with a “personal care package.” Also required: a good track record on Airbnb.

Booking will commence on April 17 at 6 p.m. CEST via Airbnb.
