Station 19 actor Boris Kodjoe is on the mend after his second back surgery.

The German actor and model gave fans a health update on Instagram on Friday, August 18 in a video taken right before he went into the operating room.

"I'm at the hospital. I'm about to have a double laminectomy, back surgery," he explained in the clip.

Donning his patient gown as he lay on a hospital bed, the 50-year-old noted that this is not his first time having the procedure: “It's my second one in 10 years. The first time worked really well, so now I'm doing it on two other levels: L1 and L2 and L3 and L4.”

He further clarified his decision, stating, "My sciatic nerve has been impacted for a while now, and it's super painful all day, every day. So I'm taking care of it today."

Per the Mayo Clinic’s description, the procedure is done to create "space by removing bone spurs and tissues associated with arthritis of the spine" and includes "removing a small piece of the back part (lamina) of the small bones of the spine (vertebrae)" in order to enlarge the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the cord or surrounding nerves.

The actor explained that the procedure would be performed by his former surgeon's son: "Dr. Watkins, Jr., is performing this one, while his father did the last one 10 years ago. Both are very accomplished spinal surgeons so I feel great.”

He wrapped up the clip by stating, "Talk to you when I wake up."

The actor later posted a brief update on how he was feeling in the caption of the post, writing, “Then this happened. Had a partial laminectomy in two places, a back surgery I had in two other vertebrae ten years ago. Thank you, Dr Watkins Jr @thebackdoctorapp and his amazing staff ❤️ for taking good care of me.”

As for what’s to come post-op, Kodjoe explained that he would “rest and heal” before doing “PT for a couple of weeks.”

“Auf geht’s!! 🙏🏾😊💪🏾” he concluded, which translates from German into English as “let’s go.”

The following day, Kodjoe shared a photo cuddled up on the couch with his pups, informing fans that he was back home and kicking off the “rest” part of his healing journey started.

“When Teddy and Max greet you at the door because your wife’s in rehearsals in NY, your daughter’s in school in DC and your son’s at practice,” he wrote before adding sincere thanks to everyone who has been supporting him, “Thank you all for your love and well wishes. I’m resting and healing. ❤️🙏🏾😊”

His wife, And Just Like That star Nicole Ari Parker, commented, “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️my loves.”

The doting father later took to the gram to wish his daughter Sophie, 18, a happy first day of college with a sweet montage that included shots from when she was just a toddler.

“Happy first day of school, Sophie-cakes. You had to figure out a lot as a young girl. To see you get ready to soar into your life with certainty and confidence makes all the sense in the world to us. We love you and we are so proud of you. ❤️ You got next!” he captioned the clip.

Kodjoe and Parker are also parents to 16-year-old Nicolas.

Station 19 wrapped up its sixth season in May and was renewed for a seventh season that likely won’t air until 2024 due to the ongoing writers' and actors’ strikes.
