Station 19’s season 5 finale episode, titled “Crawl Out Through the Fallout,” left fans with more questions than answers. At the forefront is the question where did Jack (Grey Damon) go? Well, a particularly observant viewer of the ABC drama has a pretty good idea.
Even before Maya (Danielle Savre) walked up to Natasha (Merle Dandridge) and Robert (Boris Kodjoe) to demand for her job back, the fire chief was already alluding to “a position opening up” at Station 19. After Maya ruffled Natasha’s feathers, the captain did offer a job — just not to her. Unbeknownst to everyone, Natasha was thinking Andy (Jaina Lee Ortiz) would be the best person to fill a recently vacant position after her charges were dropped.
“Now, that you’re coming back to 19, you’ll have a chance to make it up to me ‘cause it turns out, a lieutenant just opened up,” Natasha said. Although she stopped short of telling Andy whose spot she would be taking over, she quickly put two and two together. Andy rushed over to Jack’s locker only to find it empty and with a post-it note that read “You’re welcome.”
Despite trying to catch up to the co-captain, Andy was too late. “Jack?! Jack! Where the h--- are you going?” she yelled as he drove away. It was the same question the entire Station 19 fandom had watching the season 5 finale from home. Looking back at the episode, there didn’t seem to be any telltale signs that Jack was heading out the door. He didn’t hesitate to be there for Andy while she tried to build a strong enough case to overturn her possible 10-year jail sentence.
That said, Maya and Carina (Stefania Spampinato) got an earful from Jack when they checked up on him during the party. “I’m fine … I don’t need to be part of everything,” he said, referring to the trio’s family planning. “Stop, okay? I appreciate I do. But I don’t need a pity family, okay?” Eagled-eyed fans may have also caught Jack visibly affected by Ben (Jason George)’s emotional speech about family — a topic he’s felt lost in.
The next time viewers would see Jack would be in the parking lot. While there were differing opinions about how the season 5 finale concluded, several folks came to his defense for bowing out with saying goodbye. Reacting to a fellow Station 19 fan on Reddit calling Jack’s actions “a tantrum,” another person posed a different explanation.
“Tantrum is not getting what you want. This is Jack dealing with finding out his parents didn’t want him and also finding out that he has what 2-3 other siblings?” replied Reddit user @TheQuirkyReddit. “Come on… far from tantrum. This is him not knowing how to deal him needing to get away from everything. Him probably needing to clear his mind.”
A different fan @savejenni agreed, “I mean it's not a tantrum, that plays down the pretty extreme emotional trauma [he’s] going [through].”
So, is Jack just blowing off some steam or did he leave permanently? It’s tough to say at the moment but either could be possibilities. Until then, we’ll be keeping an eye out for actor Grey Damon, who plays the (now-former?) Station 19 member, and his Instagram in case he drops any hints about what season 6 will entail.
