State of New York Makes Big Announcement About the Sale of Dogs and Other Pets

Animal activists are rejoicing!

New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a legislative ban on Thursday that will stop pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits sourced from inhumane breeders. This bill, dubbed the Puppy Mill Pipeline Bill, will take effect in December 2024.

The purpose of this bill is to crack down on puppy mills that are often accused of abusing their animals. TikTok user @bailingoutbenji, a nonprofit focused on ending puppy mill cruelty, posted a video explaining what this ban means and the significance it will have.

Animal activists are rejoicing over this positive news as it is a step in the right direction to ending the puppy mill-to-retail pipeline. "Yes! We need this bill all over the US!" said TikToker @jeepin_service_pups. New York joins California, Washington, Maine, Maryland and Illinois, all of which have enacted similar bans.

Over 65 pet stores across the state will have to stop sourcing their animals from inhumane puppy mills or kitten mills. "This is huge because puppy stores in the state of New York import more than 12,000 puppies from puppy mills every single year," the TikToker explained. This might cause puppy mills to downsize or even close, a major hope for supporters.

Those who want to buy from a breeder still can. They'll buy directly from a breeder instead of going through the pet store. This would give future pet owners transparency as they can visit and buy from responsible breeders. Another added hope with the ban is that those wanting a pet will adopt and not shop. This is especially important as shelters and rescue organizations are overflowing with animals.
