State trooper helps deliver baby after pulling over parents for speeding on their way to the hospital

A North Carolina state trooper’s Saturday night took a surprising turn after a traffic stop turned into something entirely different. After State Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Maynard pulled over a couple speeding down the highway, he realized that the female passenger was in labor and helped deliver the couple’s baby on the side of the road, Raleigh, N.C., news station WTVD reports.

Jimmy and Laura Baker were on their way to the hospital when Maynard flashed his police lights behind them. When the three of them realized there wasn’t time to make it to the hospital, Maynard told Jimmy Baker that they had to deliver the baby themselves. The state trooper told Raleigh, N.C., station WRAL that he then called an ambulance and grabbed gloves and a blanket from his police car.

“I just tried to do the best that I could do with things I’ve seen on TV and things I had heard. Relieved that everything went good,” he told WTVD. Yahoo Lifestyle has reached out to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for further comment.

Maynard had never delivered a baby before, but the Bakers’ little girl — who they named Halyn — is reportedly perfectly healthy. She was taken to a local hospital after she was born, where Maynard took a photo with the family.

Maynard has an 11-year-old daughter and told WTVD that delivering baby Halyn brought back his own memories.

“For so many years, I’ve seen a lot of death,” Maynard said. “To be a part of the process that actually brings a life into this world is absolutely amazing.”
