Start of Packers offseason workouts delayed due to mid-April blizzard because Wisconsin

The frozen tundra is supposed to be thawed by tax day.

When the Green Bay Packers looked at the calendar and figured out their voluntary offseason workout program could start on April 16, they probably never figured it would be delayed by a blizzard. Then again, being in Northeast Wisconsin, it couldn’t be ruled out either.

As Green Bay gets pounded with a blizzard that is virtually unprecedented, especially for April, the Packers had to delay the start of their offseason workout program. Plenty of players couldn’t even travel to Green Bay because of the snowstorm, which brought about two feet of snow and was the second-largest ever recorded in Green Bay (and that’s saying something). Jason Wilde wrote for the Wisconsin State Journal that plenty of players including quarterback Aaron Rodgers were unable to fly to Green Bay before Monday’s workout.

Remember when you look at some of the photos sent out by the Packers, it’s April.

Wilde wrote that the Packers won’t lose one of their allowed offseason sessions due to the snow-out, because the team wasn’t required to start on Monday.

The largest snowstorm in Green Bay history was 29 inches in 1888, according to the National Weather Service. By Sunday night this snowstorm had moved up to second all-time with 23.5 inches. Given the havoc last week’s weather caused for Major League Baseball — the six cancellations Sunday in MLB were the most in a single day since 2008, and those came when a hurricane pounded the East Coast — it’s not a huge surprise that some NFL teams were affected slightly too.

Hopefully for Packers fans the snow will clear up before the start of the NFL draft next week, but being Wisconsin, that’s no guarantee.
