'Starsky and Hutch' Star David Soul Dead at 80

David Soul, British-American singer and actor most notably remembered for his role in Starsky and Hutch, has died. He was 80 years old.

According to a statement from the late star's wife, Helen Snell, Soul passed away after succumbing to cancer in a "valiant battle for life," per DailyMail.

"David Soul - beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched," she shared on Friday, Jan. 5.

Soul reportedly died on Thursday, Jan. 4, at a hospital in London, where he lived. He suffered a number of health issues in his life, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), TMZ notes.

The late actor portrayed the character of Detective Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson in the original action TV series—which ran for four seasons from 1975 to 1979 on ABC—alongside Paul Michael Glaser's Detective Dave Starsky.

In 2004, Soul even made a cameo in the Starsky and Hutch movie remake, which featured Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

He also had roles in 1979 TV miniseries, Salem's Lot, and 1980 TV movie, Homeward Bound, after a host of other small roles during the mid-1960s.

Off-screen, he saw success with a music career as a singer-songwriter, charting a No. 1 hit with the 1976 release of "Don't Give Up On Us."

In addition to his wife, Soul is survived by his six children and several grandchildren.
