Star Wars: Ahsoka launched its long-awaited two-episode premiere on Disney+ yesterday, and reviewers across the Internet have weighed in.

In the show, former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. It’s currently sitting at a healthy 93% aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it bright, funny, and praising a solid story that deftly balances new elements with old.

Not everyone agrees, however. Some say it’s a slow-mover, with barely anything meaningful happening in the first two episodes despite it adding up to almost a movie’s runtime in length. But it’s worth remembering that this is only the first quarter of Star Wars: Ahsoka.

We’ve still got six more episodes to go, which will air on Disney+ every Tuesday at 9pm EST. For reviews of the first two episodes, read on below.

Review Roundup

  • IGN: “Disney+’s new live action series Ahsoka has the potential to explore the more cosmic and mystical aspects of the Star Wars universe, but the first two episodes feel flat at times as characters have to spend too much time catching up viewers who didn’t watch Star Wars Rebels. The action and visuals are spectacular, but the new actors are too stiff in their portrayal of the wonderful cast of characters that made Dave Filoni’s animated series worthy of continuation.”

  • Empire: “Fans of Clone Wars and Rebels will appreciate this live-action continuation of Dave Filoni’s saga, while newcomers should dig its promise of a different kind of Force clash.”

  • Variety: “...for lifelong fans who understood the significance of “Rebels” and fell in love with one of the most iconic female characters of the franchise, learning more about her story and what happened to Thrawn and Ezra will likely be a transcendent experience.”

  • The Guardian: “Despite great potential for its all-female trio, the latest space series takes our interest in the franchise for granted. Even the David Tennant-voiced droid is a missed opportunity…The foundations are in place, then, if the show can remember that Star Wars at its best is snappy and fun, not slow and serious.”

  • Independent: “Disney’s latest Star Wars outing is flat, flimsy and devoid of life. In the world of space operas, these are all more Florence Foster Jenkins than Luciano Pavarotti.”

  • Gizmodo: “Whether or not Ahsoka will live up to the seven seasons of Clone Wars and four seasons of Rebels that proceed it is yet to be seen—especially given how much of this debut leans on an emotional connection to those shows.”
