Starbucks Overcharged Someone $4K—And Then The Reimbursement Check Bounced

For one Tulsa, Oklahoma, man, a trip to Starbucks has turned into a nightmare. It all started when Jesse O'Dell visited his local Starbucks for a Venti Iced Americano and a Venti Caramel Frappuccino with an espresso shot.

According to FOX23, after making the purchase, O'Dell discovered that his credit card was charged nearly $4,500 for the order. It turns out that an additional $4,444.44 was added to the total as tip. O'Dell says he hit "no tip" after placing his order.

Upon reaching out to Starbucks, he was informed by the area director that "a network issue or a sticky button" was to blame for the outlandish tip. Starbucks sent along two reimbursement checks, but in a bizarre turn of events, the checks O'Dell received allegedly bounced. He has since had to postpone his family's trip to Thailand due to the financial strain.

“I’m not looking for any like public apology, I wouldn’t expect it if I had to wait a month to get my own money back so in something like that I think Starbucks just needs to have a little bit of respite and look back at how they want to deal with customers in the future,” O'Dell shared with FOX23.

In a statement sent to the news station, Starbucks attributed the mistake to human error and added that the issue of reimbursement has been resolved.

News of O'Dell's costly debacle comes just a matter of months after Starbucks rolled out its new tipping system. The system, which has been met with some pushback from both customers and baristas, lets people tip using their debit or credit card.
