Starbucks announced today that it will begin requiring face coverings in all of its U.S. company-owned café locations starting on July 15.

Facial coverings are already required in public in many parts of the U.S. as many states are seeing an increase of COVID-19 cases, but this is an update on Starbucks' previous policy that "requested" all customers wear face masks inside of the stores. This comes as many individual retailers, chains, and restaurants across the country have required face masks for entry.

Customers who live in places where face coverings are not required by local and state ordinances and who are not wearing a facial covering will have other options to order Starbucks rather than going inside, including ordering at the drive-thru, getting their drink by curbside pickup through the Starbucks app, or by placing an order for delivery through Starbucks Delivers, the company said.

Starbucks said that the decision to require masks in all of its company-owned U.S. stores was based on the direction of local governing bodies around the U.S. that are requiring face masks while in public, as well as guidance from the CDC, and feedback from their partners (baristas). As a reminder, the CDC recommends that "people wear cloth face coverings in public settings when around people outside of their household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain."

"The company is committed to playing a constructive role in supporting health and government officials as they work to mitigate the spread of COVID-19," Starbucks said in a recent blog post announcing the decision.
