Star Wars Variant Covers For Black History Month Feature Mace Windu, Kawlan Roken, More

Star Wars Mace Windu

Marvel is releasing a series of Star Wars variant covers to celebrate Black History Month in February 2024.

The artwork is from Ken Lashley, focusing on heroes from various Star Wars eras, including Clone Wars’ Adi Gallia, Captain Panaka from The Phantom Menace, and Kawlan Roken, from Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

"I’ve worked with and known Ken for a long time," editor Mark Paniccia said. "He’s one of the best comic book artists in the industry and one of my favorite cover artists. He brings energy and dynamism to every cover and this variant program is no exception. I’m excited for fans to see these characters illustrated in Ken’s powerful style."

"l am a huge Star Wars fan so when Mark asked if l would be interested in drawing these covers it was a fast 'HECK Yeah,'" added Lashley. "These five covers have all the bases covered, characters we all love and know along with a few surprises for the fans. l love what I do and getting to draw every day on creations that l loved growing up is a dream come true... Purple lightsabers are all over my office!"

Variant covers just keep on coming from Marvel, who have already given us covers to celebrate Wolverine’s 50th anniversary next year, some of the best Spider-Man variant covers we’ve ever seen, and variant covers for Secret Wars: Battleworld.

Did you know that before Disney’s took a bunch of characters and spun them off in their own TV shows, the director of The Incredible Hulk pitched a lone wolf and cub style Star Wars tale to LucasArts? Now you do.
