'Star Wars' Just Resolved a 'Return of the Jedi' Plot Hole That Has Agonized Fans For Decades
Star Wars isn’t exactly known for its plot coherency. Cases(s) in point: Obi-Wan Kenobi not recognizing his old buddies R2-D2 or C-3PO in A New Hope, Luke Skywalker going from zero to Jedi Master in three days, and—in the one that bothers me the most—how the hell did the Ewoks have a Leia-sized dress sitting around?
Ugh. Well, here’s some relief: A new Star Wars comic finally cleared up a plot hole from the original trilogy. Remember when Luke hops in his X-Wing, and jaunts over to Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back to go looking for his captured buddies? But leaves in the Millenium Falcon?
Then, if you remember, the next time we see Luke’s X-Wing, he’s whipping across the galaxy as if he never left an uber-valuable hunk of machinery on a foreign planet. Aside from some kind of weird galactic valet service, it’s hard to imagine how we got from A to B here.
Thanks to Star Wars #4, a canon-official comic book that sees Luke, Leia, and Lando Calrissian return to Cloud City, we finally have an answer. In the story, Luke is out looking for his missing lightsaber, but has to return to Cloud City to save Leia, who was recently frozen in carbonite by Imperials. Luke, of course, unfreezes Leia as the Imperials are about to ship her away. As he’s looking for an escape vehicle, he sees his old X-Wing, jumps in, and flies away.
There you have it—one less Star Wars plot hole to keep you up at night. Oh, and one last thing. In the comic, we get this gem of a catchphrase from Lando, which I’ll be using every time I call an Uber for the rest of my life: “Let’s go steal some transportation!”
