Star Wars: Episode II's First Title Was a 'Middle Finger' to the Jar Jar Binks Backlash

Star Wars: Episode II initially had a very different subtitle—and it was a deliberate poke at people who weren't fans of Jar Jar Binks.
The awkward, well-meaning Gungan was introduced as a major character in Attack of the Clones' predecessor The Phantom Menace, but famously went on to have less and less of a role throughout the trilogy because a few—and that's putting it very mildly— viewers were unimpressed by his onscreen antics.
Now, as part of an interview for behind-the-scenes book The Star Wars Archives: Episodes I-III 1999-2005, Jar Jar voice actor Ahmed Best has revealed that the second movie was called Star Wars: Jar Jar's Great Adventure during the early days of production.
"[It was like a] middle finger to the whole 'everyone hates Jar Jar' thing," he explained.
Elsewhere in the book, which is available to order now, franchise creator George Lucas opened up on why he sold the hugely popular series to Disney in 2012.
"At that time, I was starting the next trilogy; I talked to the actors and I was starting to gear up. I was also about to have a daughter with my wife," he said. "It takes 10 years to make a trilogy.
"In 2012, I was 69. So the question was, 'Am I going to keep doing this for the rest of my life? Do I want to go through this again?' Finally, I decided I'd rather raise my daughter and enjoy life for a while.
"I could have not sold Lucasfilm and gotten somebody to run the productions, but that isn't retiring."
