Episode 5 of Star Wars: Ahsoka, which is now streaming on Disney+, included flashbacks to scenes from showrunner Dave Filoni’s animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, bringing many fans’ childhood memories to life – and it all looked amazing. It’s never an easy feat to translate animated scenes into live-action, but Filoni and the entire crew really nailed it. A young Ahsoka? The Siege of Mandalore? Anakin Skywalker in his Clone Wars armor? We got it all.

After Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) lost her battle with Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) in the previous episode, she’s unconsciously drifting in the sea of Seatos, her mind imagining herself to be in The World Between Worlds. Here, her former master Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) awaits her. Ostensibly he wants to finish her training, but this really is more about Ahsoka dealing with her past after Baylan applied some salt to her emotional wounds last episode.

Star Wars: Ahsoka – The Battle of Teth from The Clone Wars

Ahsoka imagines herself on equal footing with Anakin until he literally pulls the carpet from under her feet and takes her on a journey through time – back to where everything began for her as a character. We see a young Ahsoka (Ariana Greenblatt) in the sandstorms of Teth, one of her first missions as Anakin’s padawan, assaulting a fortress alongside some clone troopers.

First of all, a live-action portrayal like this really brings home an important point that kind of gets lost in animation: Ahsoka is a literal child at this time – she’s tiny, she has a round childish face, a very young sounding voice. And the Jedi are sending her into a war. Anakin is training her to be a killer. It’s all wrong and this little scene perfectly encapsulates that. I’m glad that they didn’t go with the more questionable outfit she wears in the animation at this time.

Second: This is the first live-action appearance of Phase 1 Clone Armor and as expected they look pretty dope. All those guys in Attack of the Clones? CGI. No Phase 1 Clone Armor had been built to shoot that movie. Same for Phase 2 Armor in Revenge of the Sith, but we’ve already seen their live-action debut in The Mandalorian.

Third: Disney is getting the hang of this whole de-aging thing, it’s almost scary. Hayden Christensen looks exactly like he did back in the day and the outfit (plus haircut) from the animated show looks fantastic – it helps, of course, that we’ve gotten used to seeing live-action Force users in various armored equipment over the years, so it doesn’t seem out of place at all.

Star Wars: Ahsoka – The Battle of Ryloth from The Clone Wars

This scene on Teth already fed us quite well, but we got some footage from Ryloth as well. In The Clone Wars, the Republic helped the native Twi’leks to liberate their planet from Separatist occupation in a gruesome campaign, and Ahsoka surveys the damage from one of those fights.

Wounded Clones are everywhere and we see Ahsoka tenderly hold hands with one of them. If you’ve been on The Clone Wars journey with Ahsoka and the boys, this is quite a heartbreaking scene – these were her comrades-in-arms throughout her childhood and she knows that these guys unwillingly betrayed her through Order 66, she knows that they were essentially born to be pawns in Palpatine’s great game of chess. What’s more, we hear Ahsoka doubt it all and give air to her grievances and guilt.

This one is an emotional punch in the gut and Ariana Greenblatt really sold it.
Disney

This hits particularly hard due to another The Clone Wars connection: During the Ryloth arc, we see Ahsoka make a huge mistake that ends up costing many clones their lives.

We also get the first appearance of Captain Rex in this scene, the clone trooper most loyal to Ahsoka, though he only shows up in the background.

Star Wars: Ahsoka – The Siege of Mandalore from The Clone Wars

Finally, we witness a scene from The Siege of Mandalore. Anakin muses that this isn’t a battle he knows. Indeed, he wasn’t present for this one – this event, which appeared in the final season of The Clone Wars, happened concurrently to Revenge of the Sith. While Ahsoka was helping Bo Katan (Katie Sackhoff) retake her planet, Anakin and Obi-Wan were called to rescue Palpatine, who had been kidnapped by General Grievous.

Ahsoka is slightly more grown up in this one and wears the new outfit that also appeared in the animated show. We see Rex again, this time with a speaking line and in his glorious armor from the end of the war, who leads clones from the 501st Legion into a charge. Some of them wear helmets painted to resemble Ahsoka’s face, yet another detail taken from The Clone Wars.

Another highlight of this sequence: The Mandalorians loyal to Darth Maul with their red and black armor and horned helmets. Stunning. I won’t get into why there are Mandalorians loyal to Maul, because that’s a whole other thing from The Clone Wars, but they look great in live-action and you can now see where The Mandalorian's Moff Gideon stole his own armor’s aesthetics from.
