This “Star Wars” cartoon tribute to the actor behind R2-D2 will BREAK YOUR HEART

Over the weekend, Star Wars lost a very near and dear family member. The actor who has portrayed R2-D2 in EVERY Star Wars movie, Kenny Baker, passed away at the age of 81. Immediately, there was an outpouring of love for the actor, from his Star Wars co-stars, to just about everyone else in the galaxy, too.

Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, and George Lucas have all shared heartfelt and touching things about Baker, and now, The New Yorker has done something themselves, too. Turning to their well-known (and funny) comics, they’ve got a brand new image that will break your heart into a hundred pieces, just like C3-P0 was broken into a hundred pieces at the end of Empire Strikes Back.

The cartoon by artist Benjamin Schwartz shows Luke, C3-Po, and R2-D2 on the sands of Tatooine, and while that doesn’t sound too heartbreaking, you haven’t read the caption yet:

“He says he feels empty inside.”

Obviously, there was no human inside the robotic R2, because he’s a robot, after all. But beeping about how he feels ~empty inside~ is most certainly a comment about Baker, who literally did have to crawl inside the cylinder tube to portray one of the most iconic Star Wars characters ever.
