"Star Wars" Actor John Boyega Partners With Netflix to Make Films "Focused on African Stories"

Just a few months after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars actor John Boyega has locked in his next big creative project.

Earlier this week, Variety reported that John, a Nigerian-British actor who has been vocal in the past about bringing African cinema to the forefront in Hollywood, signed a major deal with Netflix. Through his Upper Room Productions company, the partnership will see him making movies in and about Africa.

Variety shared a statement from Netflix on their big deal with John and Upper Room Productions — which he founded in 2016 to earn his first producing credit on Pacific Rim: Uprising — saying that John and Netflix will be "[developing] film projects based on stories, cast, characters, crew, literary properties, mythology, screenplays and/or other elements in or around African countries."

In addition to announcing the big news on Twitter, John said in an official statement, "I am thrilled to partner with Netflix to develop a slate of non-English language feature films focused on African stories, and my team and I are excited to develop original material. We are proud to grow this arm of our business with a company that shares our vision."

David Kosse, Netflix's Vice President of International Film, built on John's sentiments. "Africa has a rich history in storytelling, and for Netflix, this partnership with John and UpperRoom presents an opportunity to further our investment in the continent while bringing unique African stories to our members both in Africa and around the world," he stated.

Netflix has been making a visible effort in expanding its international reach into Africa recently. In February, the streaming giant released the female-led South African spy drama Queen Sono. Shortly after that, Netflix announced the launch of Netflix Naija on Twitter, which will focus on creating Nigerian movies and television from Nigerian creatives. John's new partnership with Netflix certainly seems like the next big move for Netflix as they expand creatively.
