Trekkies get hyped because Paramount has Andor's Toby Haynes on board to direct a new Star Trek film that expands on the universe.

Seth Grahame-Smith will pen the script with J. J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions set to produce.

Deadline broke the news, unable to reveal much more than that it will be "an origin story that takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise. Insiders add that the final chapter in that main series, Star Trek 4, remains in active development."

The last Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, was released in 2016 and followed the crew of the USS Enterprise as they explore the furthest reaches of uncharted space, encountering a new ruthless enemy who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoë Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Idris Elba starred with Justin Lin in the director's chair.

Haynes was the primary director of the Star Wars series Andor, which is a prequel to Rogue One starring Diego Luna, Kyle Soller, Stellan Skarsgård and Genevieve O'Reilly.

He will now embark on a new major IP in Star Trek.

Further details to be announced.
