Stahl Earns EcoVadis Platinum for Second Consecutive Year

For the second year in a row, Stahl was awarded platinum status by EcoVadis, the world’s largest provider of corporate sustainability ratings.

The Dutch coatings supplier’s rating increased three points over last year for a total score of 80 out of 100—indicating the company’s “improved performance” around labor and human rights—putting Stahl among the top 1 percent of companies reviewed.

“We are proud to have maintained our platinum EcoVadis rating for the second year in a row,” Ingrid Weijer, ESG performance manager at Stahl, said. “This score reflects Stahl’s ongoing commitment to transparency and the new policies and initiatives that were introduced over the past 12 months. But we are not perfect, and the EcoVadis evaluation criteria are becoming more demanding, so we will continue to work to improve our performance into the next year.”

The Parisian sustainability rating agency scores across four categories: environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainability procurement. Its 2023 assessment found that Stahl progressed in the labor and human rights category, scoring 90 out of 100 points—up 10 points from 2022. The company said this is due to increasing efforts to improve work and safety management systems, with many of Stahl’s global manufacturing sites becoming ISO 45001 certified and more than 94 percent ISO 14001 certified.

The Netherlands-based specialty coatings company has set a 2030 target to maintain this rating and aims to do so by helping its value chain partners reduce their impact; last year, 83 percent of Stahl’s total spend on raw materials was sourced from EcoVadis-rated suppliers, the company said, up 3 percent from 2021.

Earlier this year, the Science Based Targets Initiative validated Stahl’s near-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

“Our targets are ambitious and rightly so,” said Maarten Heijbroek, CEO of Stahl, at the time. “Realizing our goal to create a more responsible coatings value chain starts with being accountable for our own environmental impact and taking concrete steps to reduce our emissions wherever possible.”
