On Friday, a South Korean court found Squid Game actor Oh Young-soo guilty of indecent assault, The New York Times reported. Judge Jeong Yeon-ju sentenced Oh, 79, to an eight-month suspended sentence and a 40-hour class on “sexual violence.” Oh, who faced up to 10 years in prison, publicly denied the charge and told press assembled at the courthouse that he plans to appeal the conviction.

Oh was charged in 2022 after an actress accused him of inappropriately touching her in August and September of 2017. He was accused of hugging and kissing the actress multiple times, and at one point “laid in her rented room, where he made potentially inappropriate sexual comments,” according to Jeong.

The actress apparently sought counseling in 2018 to deal with the traumatic fallout of Oh’s behavior, in addition to writing about the incidents in her journal and sharing them with friends. However, Oh’s success after Squid Game—a role for which he became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe— reignited the painful memories. The actress demanded an apology from Oh, who summarily issued one.

“I am sorry,” he later told the assembled press at his first hearing in February 2023. “I think I behaved badly.”

Oh, considered to be one of the most accomplished South Korean actors, has already felt the ramifications of his conviction. He will not be included in Squid Game’s second season, due out later this year; he’s also been removed from the upcoming South Korean film About Family, his scenes having been reshot with another actor. South Korea’s Culture Ministry also stopped airing a governmental commercial in which Oh appeared.
