When Spy Kids: Armageddon was announced, fans of the original franchise were hopeful that the reboot would measure up to the beloved movies from their childhood.

However, to many, those hopes were squashed when the new cast portraying the parents was unveiled.

The Robert Rodriguez-helmed flicks featured the sizzling pairing of Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas, who had the kind of romantic chemistry you seldom see between parents in children's movies. But when it was revealed that Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi would be the grown-ups, many were very vocal about being against this choice.

"Going from Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas to Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez might be the single biggest downgrade from original to remake in cinematic history," read a tweet that boasts over 19,000 likes.

Another popular tweet with over 28,000 likes read, "zachary levi AND gina rodriguez like the casting director had 2 nickels and a dream…what ever happened to SEXY PEOPLE!."

An even more viral tweet that currently has 35,700 likes noted, "zachary levi and gina rodriguez…we're good love thank you."

"They will never be them," tweeted a Spy Kids fan with a clip from the first movie, proving that Banderas and Gugino were an unstoppable pair.

Fans' strong reactions are in part due to the respective actors' controversies.

Levi has been under fire this year for expressing anti-vaccination views on Twitter in January. He has also appeared on controversial podcaster Joe Rogan's show The Joe Rogan Experience, where he expressed being a fan of Jordan Peterson, a right-wing personality who is famous for his sexist comments.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez also had a series of controversies, including saying the n-word while singing along to The Fugees' "Ready or Not" (which she apologized for) and her memeified tweet in reply to a fan struggling to pay for school who asked for financial help, in which she instead told the student to research scholarships.

In this new iteration, Rodriguez and Levi play Nora and Terrence Torrez, who are described in the tagline as the "world's greatest secret agents." Much like in the original franchise, the parents' children, Tony (Connor Esterson) and Patty (Everly Carganilla), must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.

Fans can judge Spy Kids: Armageddon for themselves when it hits Netflix on September 22.
