The reboot of Robert Rodriguez's beloved Spy Kids is out on Netflix today, and fans of the originals don't seem to be too happy about it.

Starring Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Connor Esterson, Everly Carganilla, with D.J. Cotrona and Billy Magnussen, Spy Kids: Armageddon features the children of the world's greatest secret agents who unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world. The reboot stars Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Connor Esterson, Everly Carganilla, with D.J. Cotrona and Billy Magnussen.

When asked why he thought now was the right time for a reboot, Rodriguez said, "I've always heard from fans over the years telling me how much their kids loved the movie and how many times they watched it. Now, parents who grew up with Spy Kids tell me how much fun it has been to show their own kids the movies and watch them get into it. Also, my own kids, who were in the original films, are now old enough to appreciate it even more, and they tell me anecdotally how much their friends still talk about how much that movie meant to them. So it seemed like a really full-circle time to bring the series back."

Reacting to the first clip from Spy Kids: Armageddon shared by Netflix, fans didn't hold back vocalising their distaste.

Common complaints seem to be regarding the lack of chemistry, colour and fun, which made the original movies so special.

The first Spy Kids film from 2001 holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 131 critic reviews, and even the second one from 2002 got a 75% score. It seems, though, as time has gone on, the magic of Spy Kids has faded, with Spy Kids 3: Game Over receiving a rotten rating of 45% from critics and an even worse 25% rating from audiences.

Has the Spy Kids ship forever sailed?
