This Sprawling Oceanfront Estate Near Santa Barbara Can Be Yours for $63 Million
The less ballyhooed neighbor of coastal California’s aristocratic community of Montecito, the low-key surfing town of Carpinteria has long if quietly drawn some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters to its arresting, postcard-perfect shore, including Kevin Costner, Ellen DeGeneres, George Lucas, and Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.
Padaro Lane, which runs along a slender strip of land between Highway 101 and a long, curved stretch of sand, is one of the area’s most exclusive enclaves. As such, the quiet lane is no stranger to sky-high real estate prices, and one of the neighborhood’s most expansive estates has just floated on the market with a $63 million asking price.

Tax records show the nearly 4.5-acre spread, near the tip of Loon Point at the long, meandering lane’s western terminus, had long been owned by Jay McMahan, the scion of a furniture store fortune who purchased a controlling stake in Williams-Sonoma back in 1979 and served as a director of the upscale kitchenware emporium until 2003. Both Jay and his wife of 60-some years, Jackie, have passed, and tax records show the property was sold by their family and heirs almost five years ago for $18.125 million.
The residence is secured behind gates and situated among rolling lawns at the end of a long driveway that weaves among mature specimen trees. There are four bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a couple of powder rooms, in about 6,300 square feet between the three-bedroom main house and a studio-style apartment for guests or staff.
The stately Tudor Revival meets English Country-house exterior gives way to bright, beachy interior spaces with whitewashed vaulted and beamed ceilings, cotton-white stucco walls, and a mix of hardwood and tile floors. Oversized mullioned windows frame long views over the ocean to the Channel Islands, and there are fireplaces in the airy living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, and family room. A sinuous staircase climbs to the second floor, where the primary bedroom boasts yet another fireplace, along with a private balcony and an ocean-view bath.
Offering unparalleled privacy and park-like tranquility along one of the most coveted stretches of beach in California, the sprawling grounds offer a spacious brick terrace with a built-in grill and a putting green amid vast lawns that roll gently to a high bluff above the beach and ocean. There is neither a tennis court nor a swimming pool currently. And, due to the vertical bluff, there isn’t direct access to the beach either.
Though the asking price is more than three times what was paid less than five years ago, a stately East Coast-style home a few doors down on just two oceanfront acres was sold last month for $47 million. It is also not, by far, the most expensive Padaro Lane property currently on the market; a nearby spread is priced at $80 million, and another is listed at $109 million. Plus, saving some costly headaches and hassle for the next owner, marketing material indicates that plans to overhaul the existing home and build a new guest house and pool are “in final review.”
