‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ meme shows what people thought they were promised versus the reality of what they got

SpongeBob SquarePants memes are ubiquitous and provide countless laughs across social media.

Right now, another meme from the show is trending on social media, as users show the difference between their expectations and what they actually received. In the clip, King Neptune opens a cloud to show the reward. Then, after seeing what is behind the cloud, he closes it and opens it again to reveal the correct prize.

On TikTok, users have applied this to nearly every topic imaginable, from hairstyles to job benefits.

“My mom choosing my hairstyle for most of my life,” wrote @_adapt3rx.

The struggle of being told to get a specific hairstyle is a common one, according to the comments.

“Same with my mom not letting me have cornrows as a kid,” said @svmurvi_blvck96.

Furthermore, people feel they are also being led on at work, especially when it comes to rewards and benefits.

“Employers rewarding good employees,” wrote @mynameisrickii in their post.

While some people have employers that reward them with salary increases, several users don’t experience that.

“My job just gives me more work without so much as a ‘thank you,’” said @b2tharizz.

“When I worked at Panera they gave us all a one cent raise right before Christmas and then I quit,” said @twix.the.bun.

TikTokers are even using this meme to criticize the construction of the cities they live in.

“American cities deciding what to spend their transportation budget on,” wrote @ecourbandesign.

King Neptune and SpongeBob SquarePants help creatively bring to life the gap between expectations and reality.
